Statistics and Facts About Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the western world, affecting between 12% and 20% of a country’s population.

40 million adults in the United States, aged 18 and older, that’s over 18.1% of the U.S. population, are affected by anxiety disorders

The cost of anxiety disorders is huge in some countries taking up to a third of the annual spend on mental health.  U.S. figures for this spend are the highest at more than $42 billion a year according to “The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders,” a study commissioned by ADAA and published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Vol. 60, No. 7, July 1999.

More than half of these costs are associated with the repeated use of health care services for the grand sum of $22.84 billion.

If someone suffers from an anxiety disorder, they are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalised for psychiatric disorders.
